What can we do to address sexual strangulation?

ABC Radio National

Recently, there’s been a lot of discussion about sexual strangulation and what we can do to address its prevalence and normalisation.

57% of young Australians aged 18-35 have been strangled during sex. Research identifies pornography as the most significant influence in this rise. Many young people have had their sex lives shaped by multibillion-dollar industries profiting from the promotion of harm.

The Australian Government is currently considering banning the possession and distribution of pornography that depicts strangulation and suffocation – a measure the UK Government adopted last year. The Government is also considering an urgent review of consent and respectful relationships education in schools, alongside the ability for users to have more control over social media algorithms.

On this episode of ABC current affairs program The World Today, I express my support for a UK-style ban along with other experts.
